Unit 31: Social Action

Assignment 31.1

Task 1: Purpose and Impact of Social Action

Social Action: this is when media is used as a creative tool to increase and inform the public knowledge about specific causes that are currently happening in the world in order for them to take action and get them to help make a change.

Purpose and impact of social action : the purpose of social action is about creating an impact and a change within their targeted audience or a greater scale of people.

An example of a social action documentary would be 'Supersize Me'.

The purpose of this documentary is to make people aware of how fast food restaurants such as Mcdonalds can affect your health. In the documentary Morgan Spurlock eats nothing but Mcdonalds for an entire month and put his health at risk to show just how bad the food is for people. At the beginning he goes to the doctors and checks his health and doctors say that his body is healthy but once the month is over the results that come back from the doctors about his body is very shocking. He created this documentary to target young people in America due to their increase in obesity for young children and also examines the corporate giants growing role in the lives of American customers. since McDonalds is such a huge, internationally well knows fast food restaurant, it didn't make a difference or affect the business. however, just a day before the documentary was released McDonalds had come up with a new Go Active menu with healthier options. The styles of this documentary would be poetic and expository. This is because the documentary is sending a message to the public about how fast food can effect your health in a really bad way. It is poetic since Morgan Spurlock shows how this experiment changed his life.

Another example would be 'The Insider: Reggie Yates'.

This documentary is about Reggie Yates, a British actor who spends one week in Bexar County Jail, Texas, eating, sleeping and working alongside other inmates. He decides to show us the lives of criminals that are in jail. America is known for incarcerating more people than any other country in the world, and has the largest population of inmates in Texas. Throughout his time there he will be showing us exactly what is life really like on the inside, and what is the real impact of being locked up in America's criminal justice system. He mainly targeted this and young teens and adults to show the consequences of not following the law and being in gangs since the united kingdoms crime rate has also increased especially within the young children population.
